Christmas Lighting Ideas 2026: How to Create a Warm, Festive Glow at Home

27 Oct 2026

There is nothing quite like the first evening the decorations go up, the lamps are switched on and the whole house starts to feel like Christmas. Good lighting is what makes that magic last. Our Christmas lighting ideas will help you create a warm, festive glow that feels welcoming for guests and relaxing for you, from early December right through to New Year.

Festive lighting works best when it builds on the lights you already love, rather than relying on a single string of fairy lights. In this guide our team shares practical advice on layering lamps, lighting the tree and the dining table, welcoming visitors at the door and choosing the colours and finishes that are trending this winter.

Why lighting makes Christmas feel special

Christmas is a season of long, dark evenings, so the lights in your home are on for far longer than in summer. That makes them one of the biggest influences on how the festive period feels. Harsh overhead light can flatten even the most beautiful decorations, while soft pools of warm light make baubles sparkle, greenery look lush and every room feel cosier.

The secret is contrast. A room lit by several low, warm sources has gentle shadows and glowing highlights, which is exactly the atmosphere people picture when they imagine a perfect Christmas evening. Fairy lights, candles and lamps all play their part, but they look at their best when the main ceiling light is dimmed right down or switched off altogether.

Good festive lighting also needs to be practical. You will still be cooking, wrapping presents, playing games and hosting family, so the best Christmas lighting ideas give you a bright setting for busy moments and a softer one for relaxing. Planning a few layers now means you can switch between the two easily once the celebrations begin.

Layer warm lamps around the room

Lamps are the foundation of a cosy Christmas. Place them at different heights and in different corners, such as a table lamp on a sideboard, a floor lamp beside the sofa and a smaller lamp on a bookcase. Spreading light around the edges of the room makes it feel larger and more inviting, and it gives your decorations a beautiful backdrop.

Choose bulbs around 2,700K or warmer for a golden, candle style glow that sits happily alongside fairy lights. Fabric shades in deep reds, greens or soft creams add colour and filter the light gently. If you are looking for new pieces, our table and floor lamps include traditional and contemporary designs that will look lovely long after the tree comes down.

Dimmers make lamps even more useful over the festive season. A plug in or inline dimmer lets you turn a reading lamp into a soft accent light for film nights, and timer plugs can switch lamps on as darkness falls so you always come home to a warm glow. Both are simple to add and need no changes to your wiring.

Balance the tree and fairy lights with your home lighting

The Christmas tree is usually the star of the room, so think about where its light falls. Position the tree away from your brightest lamp so the two do not compete, and let a nearby lamp add a soft glow to the wall behind it. This gives the tree depth and stops it looking like a bright island in a dark room.

Match the colour of your fairy lights to the rest of the room where you can. Warm white strings blend beautifully with traditional lamps and brass fittings, while cooler white or coloured lights can clash with a warm living room scheme. If you love colour, keep it to the tree and use warm white lights on mantelpieces, garlands and shelves.

Fairy lights are wonderful for highlighting architectural details. Wind them through a garland on the stairs, drape them along a mantelpiece or tuck a battery string inside a glass vase or lantern. Combined with wall lights set low, they turn quiet corners into little festive moments without adding clutter or glare to the room.

Lighting the Christmas dinner table

Christmas dinner deserves lighting that is bright enough to serve, carve and see everyone's faces, yet soft enough to feel special. A pendant or chandelier over the table is ideal, hung roughly 75 to 85cm above the tabletop so it lights the meal without dazzling anyone. Put it on a dimmer and lower it once the plates are served.

Candles add the finishing touch. Group pillar candles or lanterns down the centre of the table, keeping them low enough for guests to chat across. Real candles should always be kept well away from foliage and crackers, so battery candles are a sensible choice for garlands and centrepieces. Their flicker pairs perfectly with a dimmed pendant above.

If your table sits in an open plan space, light the dining area separately so it feels like its own room. Our dining room lighting collection includes statement pendants, chandeliers and wall lights designed to frame the table. Keep the kitchen task lighting on its own circuit, so the cook has bright light while the diners enjoy a gentle glow.

A warm welcome in the hallway and at the front door

Your hallway is the first thing visitors see, so it is worth making it glow. A lantern pendant or a pair of wall lights on a warm, low setting instantly says welcome. Add a table lamp on a console or hall table and the space will feel cosy from the moment the door opens, even on the coldest December evening.

Staircases are a lovely place for festive styling. Wind a garland and warm white fairy lights along the banister, and make sure the stairs themselves are still clearly lit for safety. A dimmed wall light at the top of the stairs is perfect when guests are staying, giving a gentle night light without disturbing anyone sleeping.

Outside, a well lit porch helps guests find you and makes the house look inviting from the street. Wall lanterns either side of the door and low path lights guide visitors safely to the step. Outdoor fittings must carry a suitable IP rating, ideally IP44 or above, and festive lights used outside should be clearly marked for outdoor use.

Festive colour and finish trends for 2026

This winter, rich red is making a confident comeback, paired with forest greens, warm creams and natural textures. Warm white light flatters these deep colours beautifully, making them feel rich rather than dark. Lamps with red or green shades are an easy way to bring the look into a room, and they can stay out well beyond the festive season.

Metallic finishes are just as important. Antique brass, soft gold and bronze catch the light from candles and fairy lights, adding a gentle sparkle that suits both traditional and modern homes. Smoked and amber glass are popular too, giving a warm, glowing effect even when a light is switched off, which is perfect for creating a cosy atmosphere.

For a classic English Christmas, our Laura Ashley Christmas collection brings together timeless lighting, cushions and accessories in festive colours and patterns. Choosing pieces you love all year means your Christmas styling becomes part of your home rather than something packed away in January, which is both easier on the budget and kinder to the planet.

Plan ahead for a stress free festive season

A little planning in November makes December far more relaxing. Walk through each room in the evening, note where it feels dark or harsh, and decide where a new lamp, dimmer or wall light would help. Check that your bulbs are warm white and dimmable where needed, and replace any that have dimmed or changed colour over the year.

Safety matters with so many extra lights in use. Avoid overloading extension leads, switch off fairy lights before bed and check older festive lights for damaged cables. Timers are an easy way to make sure decorative lights only run when you are home and awake, and LED strings stay cool and use very little electricity.

Lighting also makes a thoughtful present. A beautiful lamp, a set of candle holders or a statement shade is something friends and family will enjoy every evening. Frequently asked questions

What colour fairy lights look best with home lighting?

Warm white fairy lights, around 2,200K to 2,700K, blend best with traditional lamps, brass fittings and warm white bulbs. Cool white or multicoloured lights can clash with a warm living room, so if you love colour, keep it to the tree and use warm white lights elsewhere.

How high should a pendant light hang over a Christmas dinner table?

Hang a pendant or chandelier roughly 75 to 85cm above the tabletop. This lights the food and faces clearly without blocking views across the table or dazzling guests. Fitting it to a dimmer lets you lower the light once the meal is served.

How can I make my home feel cosy at Christmas without overhead lights?

Layer several low, warm light sources around the room, such as table lamps, floor lamps, wall lights, fairy lights and battery candles. Use warm white bulbs around 2,700K and dim or switch off the main ceiling light to create soft pools of light and gentle shadows.

Can I use indoor Christmas lights outside?

No. Lights used outdoors must be clearly marked as suitable for outdoor use and carry an appropriate IP rating, ideally IP44 or above. Indoor lights are not protected against rain and damp, which can make them unsafe. Always use outdoor rated extension leads and sockets too.

When should I start planning my Christmas lighting?

November is the ideal time. Check each room in the evening, note any dark or harsh areas, and order new lamps, bulbs or dimmers early so they arrive before decorating begins. Planning ahead also gives you time to arrange an electrician for any wired changes.
