Lighting Your Home in Springtime

Lighting Your Home in Springtime

06 Mar 2023

Later this month the clocks go forward, and we see the start of Spring with longer days and lighter evenings. But what can you do to light up your home in Springtime to make the most of the additional sunny days we can expect. Start by making the most of natural light by opening up your curtains and blinds to let in as much natural light as possible.

The Light Company’s lighting specialist Judy Davison also recommends that you update your light fixtures to something lighter and brighter to reflect the spring mood. Here are her recommendations:

Task Lighting

You should add task lighting in areas where you need more focussed light such as reading nooks or kitchen counters. Task lighting refers to a type of lighting that is specifically designed to provide focused light to specific areas of a room where tasks are performed such as table and floor lamps.

Benefits of task lighting include:

  • Improved visibility: Task lighting ensures that the area being illuminated is well lit, which makes it easier to see and perform tasks, such as reading, cooking, or working.
  • Reduced eye strain: By providing bright and focused light to the area where you are working, task lighting reduces eye strain and helps prevent headaches.
  • Increased safety: Task lighting can also increase safety by illuminating areas that might be hazardous, such as stairs or cluttered spaces.
  • Enhanced aesthetics: Task lighting can also enhance the aesthetic appeal of a room, by adding a touch of elegance and sophistication to the space.
  • Energy efficiency: Task lighting is often more energy-efficient than overhead lighting, as it uses less power to provide the same amount of light.
  • Increased productivity: Task lighting can also help increase productivity by creating a brighter and more focused work environment.

Accent Lighting

You can also use accent lighting to brighten up your home this spring. Accent lighting is used to highlight specific features or objects in a room to create visual interest and add depth to the space. Accent lighting serves to draw attention to the objects or features being lit and is usually used in combination with other types of lighting, such as task lighting or ambient lighting.

Examples of accent lighting include:

  • Spotlights: Used to highlight key area such as kitchen islands or a low ceilinged bathroom.
  • Uplights: Used to direct light upward to highlight a tall object or feature, such as a plant or a piece of furniture.
  • Picture lights: Used to illuminate works of art or photographs.
  • Strip lights: Used to illuminate shelves, cabinets, or other interesting features.

Accent lighting can be used to create a warm and inviting atmosphere, highlight the best features of a room, and create visual interest and depth.

Outdoor Lighting

Don't forget to add lighting to your outdoor spaces, such as your porch, patio, or deck.

Here are some of our top tips for outdoor lighting for spring gardens:

  • Path lighting: Illuminate walkways, paths, and steps with low-level lighting to provide safety and guide the way.
  • Spotlighting: Highlight specific plants, trees, or garden features with spotlights.
  • Solar lighting: Use solar-powered lights to save energy and reduce your carbon footprint.
  • Up-lighting: Use uplights to add height and dimension to trees and plants.
  • String lights: Add a warm and inviting touch to your garden with string lights.
  • Water features: Illuminate water features, such as fountains or ponds, to add a calming and peaceful ambiance to your garden.
  • Landscape lighting: Create a cohesive look by using landscape lighting to illuminate the overall shape and design of your garden.
  • Motion sensors: Install motion sensors to automatically turn lights on and off when someone enters or leaves the area.
  • Timers: Use timers to turn lights on and off at specific times, so your garden can be lit when you need it and conserve energy when you don't.

Remember to choose lighting fixtures that are weather-resistant and durable, and to position lights in a way that doesn't obstruct views or cause glare. At the Light Company we have a huge range of outdoor lights including those from our latest brand – the Quintiesse range.
