Zones & IP Ratings Explained

It is important to bear in mind that industry standards change over time, our page is for reference only. What is an IP rating?

IP stands for "ingress protection." It's a rating system that indicates how well a device can withstand certain conditions. The "IP" designation is followed by two numbers, in this instance IP65.

The first digit indicates refers to the withstand from solid objects. For example, with an IP65 lighting zone 1 fixture, this includes dust. The second digit refers to water resistance. This is particularly important for both bathroom and outside lighting.

What does the lighting industry mean by zones?

Zone 0 Explained Briefly

Zone 0 typically refers to lighting inside a bath or a shower. The voltage rating in Zone 0 is 12V maximum and this is for safety reasons. The IP for Zone 0 is IP67. IP67 is total immersion proof, and it is used in the event it is required inside a bath or shower. If you are looking for IP67 lighting, the products on this page are NOT suitable for your application.

Zone 1 Explained Briefly

At the time we published this page, Zone 1 refers to a measurement taken from the floor upwards. The distance from the floor should be at least 2.25m to the light fixture. Our IP65 lighting zone 1 is great for electricians replacing bathroom fixtures. If you are not an electrician, we highly recommend you seek advice from a qualified electrician.

Zone 2 Explained Briefly

Zone 2 has two measurement objectives to meet in total. The first measurement is taken from the perimeter of the bath and should be at least 0.6M. The second measurement is taken from the floor and should be at least 2.25m from the ground.

What does IP65 refer to specifically? How does this compare with other ratings?

The first digit refers to the ingress of solid objects

0 = No Protection

1 = Protected against penetration by solid objects 50mm+

2 = Protected against penetration by solid objects 12mm+

3 = Protected against penetration by solid objects 2.5mm+

4 = Protected against penetration by solid objects 1mm+

5 = Dust Protected

6 = Dust Tight

The second digit refers to the ingress of water

0 = No Protection

1 = Protected from vertically falling drops

2 = Protected from water drops falling at a max angle of 15°

3 = Protected from water as in the rain at a max angle of 60°

4 = Protected from splashing or projection

5 = Protected from low-pressure jets

6 = Protected from high-pressure jets

7 = Protected from temporary immersion

8 = Protected against long periods of immersion
