IP Lighting ratings & Zones Explained

Although we are taking the time to explain IP lighting, bear in mind that industry standards change over time. This can be due to updates with new lighting technologies and/or new laboratory experiment findings at trade associations. It is standard practice to seek advice from a qualified electrician and ensure the latest IEE wiring regulations are applied.

What is IP?

IP stands for "ingress protection." It's a rating system that indicates how well a device can withstand the elements. The "IP" designation is followed by two numbers, like so: IP44.

The first digit indicates how well key components within the fixture can withstand solid objects. This includes dust when the first digit is rated at 6. The second digit refers to water resistance. This is particularly important for both bathroom and outside lighting.

Why are some lighting companies referring to zones?

With bathroom lighting, different IP ratings are accepted in a bathroom under zone conditions. You have to be careful that you understand the rules for this. If you are under any doubt, speak to a qualified electrician so that the correct approach is applied. Although our products on this page for IP44 would be zone 2, we will explain the zone conditions for you.

A brief explanation of Zone 0

Zone 0 is the strictest zone and typically refers to lighting inside a bath or a shower. The voltage rating in Zone 0 is no more than a maximum of 12V for safety reasons. The IP which relates to Zone 0 is IP67. IP67 is total immersion proof, hence why it is used inside a bath or shower. In the event that you are looking for IP67 light fixtures, the products on this page are NOT suitable for your application.

A brief explanation of Zone 1

Zone 1 is the next tier down from Zone 0 and the rules are different. At the time we published this page, Zone 1 refers to a specific measurement from the floor. The distance is measured from the floor for Zone 1 and should be at least 2.25m. However, despite this rule, the preference for shower lighting is IP65. We highly recommend you seek advice from a qualified electrician if you are considering bathroom lighting. When this page was published an IP rating of 45 was the minimum threshold for zone 1 lighting.

A brief explanation of Zone 2 IP44 Lighting

Our IP44 lighting is designed for Zone 2. Zone 2 has two measurement objectives to meet, if only one is met this will not meet Zone 2 standards. The first measurement is taken from the perimeter of the bath and should be no less than 0.6M. The second measurement is taken from the floor and needs to be at least 2.25m from the ground.

What does IP44 refer to specifically? How does this compare with other ratings?

The first digit refers to the ingress of solid objects

0 = No Protection

1 = Protected against penetration by solid objects 50mm+

2 = Protected against penetration by solid objects 12mm+

3 = Protected against penetration by solid objects 2.5mm+

4 = Protected against penetration by solid objects 1mm+

5 = Dust Protected

6 = Dust Tight

The second digit refers to the ingress of water

0 = No Protection

1 = Protected from vertically falling drops

2 = Protected from water drops falling at a max angle of 15°

3 = Protected from water as in the rain at a max angle of 60°

4 = Protected from splashing or projection

5 = Protected from low-pressure jets

6 = Protected from high-pressure jets

7 = Protected from temporary immersion

8 = Protected against long periods of immersion
